Look out, Broadway, the vampires of Santa Carla are about to take over!
Great news for horror movie fans–specifically of the 1987 thriller, The Lost Boys–as it’s been officially announced that a new Broadway musical titled “The Lost Boys, The Musical” is currently in development. The movie-turned-cult-classic received critical and commercial success, grossing over 32 million dollars upon its release, a huge contrast to its 8.5-million-dollar budget. The film also won the Acadamy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Film award for Best Horror Film, and was nominated in four other categories including Best Costumes, Best Make-Up, Best Performance by a Younger Actor (Corey Haim,) and Best Supporting Actor (Barnard Hughes.)
The Lost Boys, directed by Joel Shumacher, revolutionized the antiquated depiction of vampires from withered, bat-transforming recluses who lived in castles, to a more youthful, extroverted (and dare I say attractive) brand of modern-day bloodsucker. The film was also widely inspirational to subsequent endeavors such as “True Blood,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and “Twilight.”
No word yet on whether the musical will directly correlate to the film, be a prequel, or take place post-Santa-Carla massacre. However, we know that Tony Award winner Michael Arden (Parade) will serve as Director, David Hornsby (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” writer/EP) & Chris Hoch will work their magic on the book, music will be by The Rescues (Kyler England, AG, Gabriel Mann), with Tony Award nominee Ethan Popp (Tina, The Tina Turner Musical) serving as Music Supervisor and General Management by Bespoke Theatricals.
